Line change in tick labels of a graph

Now I understand that the triangle-ish symbol is actually the "return" sign. However, I don't understand why it is not changing the line within the tick label. 

You need to paste a real carriage return character into the table instead of "\r". Simply copy two lines from notepad or something into the top edit cell (not the table itself or Igor will ask you if you want to paste multiple cells).

Or click the little document-with-pencil icon at the right end of the edit box. The resulting dialog makes it much easier to enter a CR into the text in a text wave.

Meanwhile, is there any particular reason why \r doesn't work? I mean other similar codes do fine when entered in a cell, such as \B or \Z etc. What's specifically different about \r?
